We're Buzzing About ... Black History Month

This year's theme is "Black Women in American Culture and History" and honors African American women and their contributions to the making of America.  How can you reflect and explore this year's theme in your daily life?

* Make it a part of your conversation. Be open to talking with your children about issues involving like racism, sexism and multiculturalism.  Be honest, direct and straightforward and explain to them how important it is to respect and appreciate all that people have to offer.

* Test your knowledge.  Have each family member share the story and contribution of a black woman in American history each week.  At the end of the month, you can have a "quiz" based on the women you've talked about; the winner gets a special treat. You can also find many online quizzes to see what you do and do not know to make learning fun.

* Find Black History Month events going on in your area and visit black history museums or exhibits.  Plan activities to do in your home and encourage your children's teachers to implement these lessons into their curriculum.
